“Film is 24 lies per second at the service of truth, or at the service of the attempt to find the truth.”-Michael Haneke
A movie is a comprehensive art that takes pictures of moving objects with a certain meaning and reproduces them on a projection film. Although the history of cinema has only been a little over a century since the invention of cinema to this day, movies have become not only an important art but also entertainment for people today. Movie makes people feel various emotions such as sadness, joy and even fear by visually reproducing various images across time and space and also, it helps people understand our society and the world we are living in by representing reality. So, how has film and cinematography developed so far together?
Early years 1830-1910
The Lumière brothers, as inventors and film directors, invented films with photography techniques. This was taken in 1895 and many people were surprised at that time because they had never seen moving pictures when it released for the first time, and it is still called as the beginning of the film and video.
The silent era 1910-27
For modern people now, movies and videos with sounds obviously seem natural, but in the 1910s and 20s, there was no technology to synchronize video and voice, so they had to replace actors’ lines with subtitles to make films. In France and Germany, many silent films had been created that valued the expression of art. While the film industry slowed down in Europe due to the World War I, the film market gradually expanded in the United States, also the film industry in US took shape and entertainment films were born along with many films where Charlie Chaplin appeared.
The talkies – Introduction of sound, 1930s
A sound film is a combination of screen and sound, which technically combines sound and image by synchronizing moving screens with sounds. It was in the early 1900s that sound films were first released to public, but it took a long time to complete this synchronization technology and to make it commercial scale. Therefore, sound films began to be screened in earnest from the 1930s. Sound movies were named talkies because they were called ‘talking pictures’. In particular, the film, which is believed to have made a full-fledged appearance of the voice, which is ‘Jazz singer’, and the scene where the main character sings is said to have shocked the audience at that time.
Films in 21st century
Like early 20th centuries films, modern-day films are also considered as a work of art, and also many things must be considered to complete one film, from directing to mise-en-scene. But the difference is that movies are now a really huge industry which needs many other industries, including planning and production, investment, distribution, screening, and marketing. Also another big difference between classic old films and modern days films is, like Avengers, hero and series movies tear down the movie and reality by selling merchandise goods or making fans to experience the world of the movie through theme parks such as universal studio.
Overall, a film is both an art and entertainment with a short history compared to other type of arts. It can contain a lot of information in each frame, and this information becomes a meaning, which in turn can have a lot of influence on people. Movies give people an opportunity to look at the world differently and to experience different cultures. However, the global film market is a strategic site for examining the global influence of American media culture. The chart below shows how many movies has been produced so far in each countries. In this era of easy accessing to media, movies have become one of the powerful means of spreading other cultures to the world and America is it’s on a roll.
The film industry, which has developed rapidly so far, will continue to change to satisfy audiences in various forms. For example, there are already some movie theaters which are developed to satisfy 5 senses of audience with 4D film but if technology is more developed and combined with VR or AR technology, it would be able to provide more entertainment to people in the future.
